States We’re In blends scattered math rock and powerful pop punk inspired drum patterns with raw, melodic guitars, therapy-derived vocals and driving post-rock, post-hardcore and emo influenced bass runs. With members’ varying musical interests and experience, the common thread through the project is the last 3 decades of the ever expanding and overlapping micro-genres within rock, indie, punk and emo. Song structures and vocal melodies are familiar, catchy but somewhat unconventional: States We’re In often eschews the arrangements that come intuitively, looking for something new.

Emerging from the music technology scene in Berlin, States We’re In is a project created by three colleagues and friends in Dec 2019. As creators of software and hardware for primarily ‘electronic’ based musicians, Harry, Neil and David started States We’re In to get away from the laptop, going back to the instruments, sounds and textures from their formative years.

Their debut 2021 EP was written and arranged in the short gaps between Berlin wide lockdowns in late 2020. Recorded in a day in their rehearsal space at the Rockhaus then mixed remotely under fresh restrictions, the production captures the essence of the project, teasing out the sound the band themselves were searching for.

Lyrically, Neil creates stories around what drives his semi-conscious, self destructive behaviors. Whilst personal, the thematic content is universal: our familial relationships, their impact on our often damaged emotional intelligence and the resulting unconscious drivers of our feelings and actions. These songs document the emotional, psychological and self medicated states of mind we all find ourselves in.
